Mental Health & Well-Being in Higher Education
Student Mental Health & Well-Being
Having a mental health issue is the number 1 reason why students drop out of school.
Mental health is a better predictor of academic success than ACT or SAT scores.
Current Campus Challenges
Better access to mental health in higher education has afforded more students the opportunity to attain higher education degrees and stigma reduction has resulted in more students seeking help. Students are living in the post-911 era with the reality of school shootings and have been raised by parents who want to protect them from everything, including failure. Campus-climate issues intermixed with national and international political tension in a 24/7 world is exhausting.
Demands for racial justice are of highest priority. Students are looking ahead at record-setting debt and dealing with food insecurity while on campus. Rates of social anxiety and thoughts of self-harm are at unprecedented levels. A global pandemic interrupted the classroom experience, income, and research of millions of students. The future of the traditional, four-year higher education experience is uncertain.
Faculty and staff are working tirelessly to offer cutting-edge educational programs and services to be competitive in the educational market and are doing so with fewer resources. Collaboration is a value, yet silos remain as focus lies on just getting to the next task. Everyone is being asked to do more with less, contributing to burnout and fears of being held to standards of liability unique to higher education. The challenge of meeting the expectations of all constituents can be overwhelming.
We understand how rewarding campus life can be, and we appreciate the toll it can take.
